Batter Up to the Plate for a Game of Beep Baseball!

Batter up to the plate for Gardner-Webb’s Annual Beep Ball Game event sponsored by the Noel Program for Students with Disabilities. Beep Baseball is an alternative form of baseball which uses beeping balls and bases, and in Bulldog Country the competition is on between the blind/visually impaired students and blindfolded faculty/staff at the University. Come out to the Softball Field on Friday, April 16, 2010 at 3:00p.m.and see if the students will be victorious for the 18th consecutive year. The Arts of Expression

The Gardner-Webb University Department of Fine Arts proudly presents a unique lecture entitled “Melodic Treasures” to be held in Blanton Auditorium, located in Hamrick Hall on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 8:00p.m. Janey Pease, an Adjunct Professor for Gardner-Webb’s Departments of Fine Arts and Psychology will lead the presentation in Express Arts Therapy. Pease identifies Expressive Arts Therapy as a rapidly growing area that focuses on the healing effects promoted by the creative process. Physical, psychological, and spiritual well being is nurtured in interpretative movement, therapeutic writing, sculpting and pottery, painting, music, storytelling, and even ecotherapy, which involves interacting with nature and the outdoors. The lecture will survey the history, theory, and practice of expressive arts therapy, and will include poetry and music.

Toot Your Own Horn at the GWU Brass Fest 2010!

Gardner-Webb University’s Department of Fine Arts and the Center for Continuing Professional Education presents “Brass Fest 2010” to be held Saturday, April 17, 2010 beginning at 9:00a.m and culminating with a special performance by the world-renowned Carolina Brass at 8:00p.m. Through clinics, masterclasses, and performances, this workshop will provide practical learning experience that will contribute to the continued proficiency of music students and educators alike. Topics for discussion include Careers and Creating Opportunities in Music, How to Practice, Preparing for Auditions, Contest Festivals, Judging, Jazz Improvisation, and more! Music educators can earn one of live continuing education credit for ten hours of continuing education. Participants, please bring your instruments!

Pastoral Perspectives: “The Theology of Suffering”

The C.O. and Eliza Greene Lecture Series presents Dr. Marva Dawn on “The Theology of Suffering” to be held on Tuesday, March 23 beginning at 9:30a.m.in Blanton Auditorium, located on the main level of Harmick Hall at Gardner-Webb University. Dr. Dawn is the Teaching Fellow in Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She is an internationally renowned theologian, author, and educator with Christians Equipped for Ministry who has preached and taught at seminaries and other religious forums throughout the United States and all over the world. An expert teacher in worship, Bible, community life, ethics, homiletics, and spiritual formation, Dr. Dawn continues to share her wisdom in over 20 books and 15 articles, some of which have won awards and others translated into Chinese, Korean, and Portuguese.

A Rally in Raleigh

“It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing”

It’s time to lace up your dancing shoes for a Gardner-Webb University Jazz Ensemble concert to be held on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 8:00p.m in the O. Max Gardner Recital Hall. Under the direction of Dr. Matt Whitfield, Professor of Music and Director of Bands, fifteen Gardner-Webb faculty and student singers and musicians will perform an array of classical and contemporary jazz selections like “Satin Doll”, “Route 66”, and “Green Onions” that will set the rhythm for patrons in their seats or those on their feet. Though the event is free and open to the public, a good will offering will be collected during the evening.

Music and Meter

In the second of three Joyce Compton Brown Lecture Series events, Dr. Jhon Akers, esteemed Spanish Classical Guitarist, will perform several selections on March 2, 2010 at 7:00p.m.in the Fireside Lounge located on the main level of the Dover Campus Center of Gardner-Webb University. In addition, he will bring comments on his inspiration, Carl Sanburg and this poet’s appreciation for classical guitar. Akers first became interested in Sandburg after reading his poem, The Guitar, Some Definitions. Since then, he has developed a program which honors Sandburg of which he states, “ It has given me a chance to play and recite and dramatize and narrate, and in the last nine years or so I have presented this dozens upon dozens of times.” When he is not serenading audiences with the sequence of stringed sounds at such venues as the Carl Sanburg Home in Flat Rock North Carolina, he serves as Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Assistant Director of Cultural Events at Wofford College. Big Brother in the 21st Century

Gardner-Webb University’s Theatre Program is pleased to invite you to the world premiere of Big Brother 2014 to be held nightly at 7:30p.m.from March 2 to March 6 in Dover Theatre. Based on George Orwell’s novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, Big Brother 2014 is an original play by Scot Lahaie, Director of Theatre and Assistant Professor of Theatre Art which Lahaie calls a “political play for an apolitical generation and a call to action for every college student in the nation.” The story is one about the abuse of power in the American government following September 11, 2001. In the play, Big Brother seeks to track down and eliminate a rogue blogger, Spartacus, who resists the government’s takeover of the internet. In keeping with the theme of autonomy found in Big Brother 2014, particularly with regards to freedoms of speech and expression, Gardner-Webb Theatre is pleased to show a live video feed of the show each evening over the internet at http://gardner-webb.edu/spartacus.

And the Show Went On

When an annual event presented by the North Carolina Symphony couldn't take place due to lack of funding, the Gardner-Webb University’s Department of Fine Arts stepped up to save the day. A group of musicians from Gardner-Webb's Department of Fine Arts performed a children's concert for all Lincoln County fifth graders (over 1,100 in all) between the ages of 10 and 12 (this includes charter schools, Christian schools, and home school groups). The program was held at the James Warren Civic Center in Lincolnton on Monday, February 22.

Home Away from Home

Since late October, construction has been underway for Gardner-Webb University’s new baseball stadium. Construction on the Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium is scheduled to conclude within the year. But in the interim, the Diamond ’Dogs will play their home games for the 2010 season at several area fields, including McNair Field, home to the Forest City Owls. Admission to the games at McNair Field will be free for all Gardner-Webb faculty, staff, and students by showing their University ID. Immediate family members of Gardner-Webb faculty and staff will also get free admission when accompanying that faculty or staff member. All other family members, however, will need to purchase tickets at the gate at $6 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors. Be sure to check the baseball schedule for updates on other home games being played at additional locations.
