Strengthening Ties With Our Baptist Family (John Bridges, 6/19/2009)

In his essay, Strengthening Ties With Our Baptist Family, Rev. John Bridges, Director of Church Relations for Gardner-Webb University, explores his role in nurturing the relationships between the University and pastors, churches as well as denominational groups including the North Carolina Baptist State Convention, Cooperative Fellowship of North Carolina, and the National Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. These relationships are marked by familial ties committed to mutual enrichment.

As a proud alumnus (1977) of Gardner-Webb University, it is a privilege as Director of Church Relations to represent Gardner-Webb to our churches. From West Jefferson in the west to Wilmington in the east there is always someone in the pew or around the table who has Gardner-Webb ties. As our alumni and friends, you are in churches across the state and beyond. From preaching opportunities, leading Wednesday evening programs, or representing the University in denominational meetings I am always proud to share the great things happening at the University with our Gardner-Webb family.

In 1905 Gardner-Webb University was founded by a group of Baptist churches meeting as the Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Baptist Associations. The commitment to remain intimately connected to the churches has been a proud part of the history and heritage of Gardner-Webb. With students, alumni, faculty, and staff serving in churches throughout the region, state, nation, and world Gardner-Webb remains committed to a life centered in faith in Jesus Christ, service to God and humanity, and leadership in our churches and communities. Gardner-Webb University has a strong relationship with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. That partnership has benefited the life of the churches in North Carolina and continues to provide scholarships for students who are members of Baptist churches affiliated to the State Convention. Other strong partnerships that benefit our students are with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina and the national Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Our commitment is to continue to strengthen our ties with churches within the framework of a life centered in Jesus Christ, commitment to the authority scripture, and spiritual and academic freedom.

When my daughter Elizabeth was making her final decision about college I asked her why she really wanted to attend Gardner-Webb. She replied, “It is a college but it feels like family”. No truer words have been spoken. GWU is a family. And you are part of that family. I am proud to be a part of the GWU family and I hope that you feel strong ties to the Gardner-Webb family also.
